Samuel Alito is an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. He was born in Trenton, New Jersey in 1950. Alito began his legal career as a law clerk for Judge Leonard I. Garth of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. He then served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the District of New Jersey, and as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the U.S. Department of Justice.
Alito was nominated to the Third Circuit by President George H.W. Bush in 1990, where he served for 15 years. He was then nominated to the Supreme Court by President George W. Bush in 2005 and was confirmed by the Senate in a 58-42 vote. Alito is known for his conservative judicial philosophy and has been described as a “textualist” and “originalist” in his interpretation of the Constitution. He has generally been a reliable conservative vote on the court, and often sides with the court’s other conservative justices in cases involving issues such as abortion, affirmative action, and campaign finance.
