Ethan Allen was a prominent American Revolutionary War figure, known for leading the Green Mountain Boys in the capture of Fort Ticonderoga in 1775. He was also a member of the Continental Army and served as a major general in the Vermont militia. Allen was a strong supporter of American independence and helped lead the Vermont Republic, which was an independent state from 1777 to 1791. He also wrote several political works, including the 1774 book “Reason the Only Oracle of Man.” Allen died in 1789 at the age of 50.

He was also a member of the Continental Army, and later served as the governor of Vermont.* He was born in Trenton, New Jersey, in 1950.
* Ethan Allen was born in Litchfield, Connecticut and raised in a family of farmers and land surveyors.
* He moved to Vermont in 1770 and became one of the leaders of the Green Mountain Boys, a group of Patriots who were fighting against the British government’s attempts to exert control over the region.
* In 1775, he and his Green Mountain Boys captured Fort Ticonderoga, a British fort in New York, without firing a shot. This was one of the first major victories for the Patriots in the Revolutionary War.
* Allen also led an unsuccessful invasion of Canada in 1775, known as the Battle of Longue-Pointe, where he and his men were captured and held as prisoners of war for two years.
* After being released from prison, Allen returned to Vermont and played a key role in the drafting of the state’s constitution. He served as the governor of Vermont from 1778 to 1784.
* Allen was a strong advocate for Vermont’s independence from the other colonies and worked to establish it as a separate state, but the effort failed.
* He died in 1789 in Burlington, Vermont, after a fall from his horse.
* Allen is remembered as a hero in Vermont, and his name is honored in many places, including Ethan Allen Park, Ethan Allen Highway, and Ethan Allen Furniture.
