Who Is Archimedes

Archimedes Biography

Archimedes of Syracuse (287 BCE - 212 BCE) was a Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor, and astronomer. He is widely considered as one of the greatest mathematicians of all time. He was born in the city of Syracuse, Sicily and he studied in Alexandria, Egypt.

Archimedes made major contributions to many fields of mathematics, including geometry, number theory, and applied mathematics. He is best known for his work on hydrostatics and buoyancy, which led to the principle known as Archimedes' Principle. He also developed methods for determining the volumes of various shapes, including the sphere and the cylinder.

In physics, Archimedes discovered the law of levers and developed the concept of specific gravity. He also made significant contributions to the field of engineering, devising machines and systems for raising water, moving heavy objects, and even for siege warfare.

Archimedes was also known for his problem-solving skills and his ability to apply mathematics to real-world problems. He wrote several books, including "The Method" which explained his method of mathematical discovery, and "On the Measurement of the Circle" which contains the first known proof of the value of pi.

He was killed during the Roman siege of Syracuse in 212 BCE, despite the orders from the Roman general to spare him due to his intelligence. His works were widely read and studied for centuries, and many of them were not rediscovered until the late Middle Ages.

Archimedes Fast Facts

Archimedes of Syracuse (c. 287 BC – c. 212 BC) was a Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor, and astronomer. He is widely considered one of the greatest scientists of all time and one of the greatest mathematicians of the ancient world.

* Archimedes was born in the city of Syracuse, Sicily, and is known to have studied in Alexandria, Egypt, where he came into contact with the great mathematicians of his time.
* He made significant contributions to the fields of mathematics, physics, and engineering, and is considered one of the greatest mathematicians of the ancient world.
* Archimedes is famous for his work on levers, buoyancy, and hydrostatics. He discovered the principle of buoyancy, known as Archimedes' principle, which states that the buoyant force on an object submerged in a fluid is equal to the weight of the fluid that the object displaces.
* He was also known for his work on levers, and is credited with the famous statement "Give me a place to stand on, and I will move the Earth."
* Archimedes also made important contributions to the field of mathematics, including the development of a system of measurement of large numbers and the discovery of the relationship between the volume of a sphere and that of a circumscribing cylinder.
* Archimedes was known for his method of proof, known as the method of exhaustion, which was used to determine the area and volume of irregular figures.
* Archimedes' works were largely lost during the Middle Ages, but were later rediscovered and translated into Latin, which allowed his ideas to be studied and understood again.
* Archimedes is widely considered one of the greatest scientists of all time and his works continue to be studied and referenced today.
