Eleanor of Aquitane Biography

Eleanor of Aquitaine was a queen consort of France and later England during the 12th century. She was born in 1122 in the Duchy of Aquitaine, which is now part of modern-day France. She was the eldest daughter of William X, Duke of Aquitaine, and became the Duchess of Aquitaine in her own right after her father's death.

In 1137, at the age of 15, Eleanor married Louis VII of France, and they had two daughters together. Eleanor was a strong-willed and independent woman and played a significant role in the politics of the time. She accompanied Louis on the Second Crusade, which was a failure. The couple eventually grew apart, and in 1152, they were divorced on the grounds of consanguinity.

Eleanor then married Henry II of England, who was 11 years her junior, in 1152. They had eight children together, including Richard the Lionheart and King John. Eleanor was an influential figure in the politics of the time and helped to secure the succession of her sons.

Eleanor played a significant role in the political and cultural life of her time, and she was known for her intelligence, beauty, and political acumen. She was also a patron of the arts and a benefactor of several religious institutions. She died in 1204, at the age of 82, and was buried at Fontevraud Abbey in France.
