You’re not your name, job, ethnicity, or any of the other identity construct. Who you really are is what can never be changed or taken away
Imagine standing in front of a mirror, gazing at your reflection. What do you see? Is it just a name, a profession, a nationality? Or is it something deeper, something that transcends labels and categories? This quote reminds us that our true essence lies beyond the surface-level identifiers society imposes on us.
Think of it this way: if you were to strip away your name, your job title, your cultural background, what would remain? It's the core of your being, the essence of who you are as a person. This essence is immutable, impervious to the winds of change or the judgments of others. It's what makes you uniquely you, beyond any external definitions or limitations.
Consider the example of a tree. A tree may be called by different names in different languages, it may grow in various environments, but at its core, it remains a tree. Whether it's towering in a lush forest or standing solitary in a barren landscape, its essence—the roots that anchor it, the branches that reach for the sky—remains unchanged. Similarly, no matter what roles we play in life or where we come from, our true essence, our innermost self, remains constant.
We often get caught up in the external trappings of identity—the titles we hold, the boxes we check off on forms, the societal expectations placed upon us. But beneath all of that lies something profound and unchanging: our authentic selves. This realization can be liberating, freeing us from the shackles of societal norms and allowing us to embrace our true nature.
Think about a time when you felt completely at peace with yourself, when you weren't defined by your accomplishments or your affiliations. What was it about that moment that allowed your true essence to shine through? How can you cultivate that sense of authenticity in your daily life?
